You Built A Revolutionary Generation

An open letter from the youth who’ve experienced too many “once in a lifetime” events.

Dear Elders,

It seems there is some disconnect between our worlds, I look at you and see a constant state of perplexion. Are you confused how we got here? Do you sit at home wondering why we advocate for change? Unaware of the systems, long broken, we seek to rearrange?

I’m not confused. We and our revolutionary thoughts are reactions to your constant inactions. We are anxious because of this perpetual state of madness. Do you notice the chaos you caused? Always expecting us to constantly solve…your problems, your disease, your injustices.

The youth is exactly how you designed us. You built a revolutionary generation.

We grew up idolizing revolutionaries. Potter. Katniss. Tris. You constantly gave us books and movies about oppression, we have the blueprint for tyranny and rebellion. Even our childhood films depicted ravished Earth paralleled with obese, corrupt civilizations in the sky. We cried as Tony sacrificed his life for the future, for youth like Peter.

Did you not expect our young, sponge-like minds to pick up a few lessons? Did you think those movies were mere escapism, not recognizing your own…
